What to Expect: Massage
We understand getting a massage for the first time can be intimidating. Here is what to expect during your first session at True Bleu Healing Arts.
Scheduling
After you schedule your massage online you will be sent an intake form. An intake form is to let us know your physical condition, any medications you are taking, and any areas you would like to be addressed during the massage.
The Intake process
When you arrive to your first massage session, you will be greeted by your licensed massage therapist. You and your therapist will then go over your intake form in person and get to know one another a little bit. In order to achieve your health and wellness goals, our therapist may ask questions about your
physical condition
medical history
lifestyle
stress levels
medications
diet
digestion
routine
To give the therapist a better understanding about your overall condition, pulse analysis may be done. (This is a traditional Thai medicine approach and is not generally done in western massage) The therapist will place three fingers on your wrist and gently compress and release.
Getting on the table
Following the intake process you will be asked to disrobe to your comfort level. To allow full benefit of the session, it is best to disrobe completely or to your underwear. Don't worry! You will be properly draped with a sheet and never exposed during a massage session. Your therapist will direct you how to lie on the massage table (face up or face down). Always lie underneath the sheets as if you were getting into bed. The therapist will leave the room while you undress and get on the table. Please remove any big earrings, watches, necklaces or bracelets - there is a bowl provided for these items to be stored.
During the session
When your therapist comes in she will adjust the bolsters, headrest, or sheets to your comfort level. During a massage you will only have one area at a time exposed. Everything else will be draped with a sheet/blanket. Muscles release better when you B R E A T H E . . . . It is important that you don't hold your breath! If you find that an area is tender it is best to bring your awareness back to your breath. This allows muscles and trigger points to fully release. Throughout the session, your therapist will ask if the pressure is right for you. Communication is key. Although our therapist's are very intuitive and understand when the pressure may be too much based off body language, if you are ever uncomfortable in any way just let her know and adjustments will be made. You will not hurt our feelings!
You may wish to adjust:
room/table temperature
neck/head support
knee support
pressure applied
stretches applied
noise level
lubricant
Talking during your session is up to you. Our therapist is happy to talk with you if you would like to start a conversation or ask questions...You lead the way!
After the session
When your massage session has ended your therapist will instruct you to take deep breathes in and out and state the session has finished. The therapist will leave the room so you can redress. Please take your time getting off the table. It is uncommon, but some people feel dizzy after a massage. When you finish getting dressed, crack the door open and wait for the therapist to return. A cup of water is given to each client at the end of each session. Based on all given information, you and your therapist will put together a plan to help you achieve your wellness goals. Generally, personal recommendations such as muscles to stretch, gentle exercise, or mindfulness practices are given. For pain management, we recommend massage 1x a week for 3-4 weeks and reevaluate following those 4 sessions. For general maintenance we recommend massage 1-2 times a month.
