Gua Sha or "scraping" is a Traditional Chinese Medicine treatment applied by gently scraping the skins oiled surface with a dull tool. This anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative technique is effective in relieving many acute and chronic conditions. Many common ailments such as headaches, migraines, neck, shoulder, back and knee pain are relieved in just minutes with this technique! A number of scientific studies have shown various acute and chronic diseases such as fever, asthma, bronchitis, and hepatitis have been effectively treated with Gua Sha.
Following your gua sha session you may have areas on the skin that appear red. These marks are called "sha". Sha is different from bruising, as these marks will not turn yellow or hurt, and disappear within a few days. Sha looks far more dramatic than it feels! It is common to only have these marks show up in few places on the skin. In Chinese medicine, Sha indicates that you have stagnant blood, qi, or heat trapped in an area. Most clients feel enormous change in just a few minutes after treatment - this is due to the mass amounts of blood flow that this tool brings. It is similar to the popular "Graston Technique" that is used by physical therapist's in the west today and is a safe, effective tool that we use throughout our practice.
